The island of Ambergris Caye is about 26 miles long & a mile or so wide, a strip of land basically going northwest/southeast, with the Caribbean Sea & Belize Barrier Reef off the eastern side of the caye. San Pedro is the only town on the island, located about 6 miles from the southernmost tip. Instead of addresses, locations are noted as being X miles north or south of town along the one main road. These beachfront properties are all located south of town, in South Ambergris Caye, on the reef side of the island.
Vacation homes Sea Haven Beach House (5 miles south), La Perla Azul (4.5 miles south), plus both Wilson Point & Casa Redonda (3.5 miles south) are basically directly across from the popular Hol Chan Marine Reserve & Shark Ray Alley snorkeling spots out on the reef. Sunset Beach & Miramar are 2.5 miles south of town core, with views of the waves breaking over the reef from the condos.
The trip to & from town can be a fun adventure on a golf cart, the main means of transportation; remember that roads in Belize and on the island are not what you might be used to, as the route involves hard sand packed road as well as road made of cobbled pavers with several speed bumps en route. But who needs to go fast when you’re on La Isla Bonita? (The road is paved in town and up until you are 2 miles south of town; from then on it is hard packed sand.)
There are several businesses close to the condos & not far from the houses…at the 3.5 miles south you’ll find Stax Sunset/Container Bar for afternoon/evening drinks & pizza. On the lagone (west) side is Playa de Sala, a boutique hotel with both a beach bar and a rooftop bar, which offers fabulous sunset views, drinks & dinner (adults only). At about the 2.75 mile mark is the beachfront “Nest Grill” at Pelican Reef, which serves breakfast and lunch, and a little north of that, just across from Miramar Villas are Happy’s Tequilaria and the Black Orchid Restaurant. Over the water on the dock just north of Sunset Beach is The Hula Bar for drinks & a meal! Then as you continue traveling towards town you’ll see Someplace South CafeBar.
Suya Tours has locations both at 3.5 miles south and 2.5 miles south, across the road from Sunset Beach. Marin’s mini-mart is at 2.5 miles south and is open 7 days a week. Of course there are many other grocery shopping and dining options on the way to, in & even north of town. By golf cart or taxi, downtown San Pedro is ~20 minutes from the houses and ~15 minutes from the condos.
We are kept safe and secure by our South Ambergris Caye Neighborhood Watch association, which is on 24 hour patrol and is always available in case of any kind of emergency, including medical; their office is located next to Miramar Villas.
Please note that while all accommodations are indeed right on the beach, there are low seawalls along the properties plus turtle grass in the water (all around reef side of the island, important to keep there for the sea life), so these are not your typical swimming beaches; it can feel a bit odd if you’re walking out in the water. Many like to swim off a pier (no night swimming, however) or in the pool, or at Secret Beach (well north of town & on the other side of the island).
In Belize beachfront areas and piers are open to the public by law, so you may see people walking or biking through, including the occasional vendor.
Locations mentioned above in relation to San Pedro town are seen on the map below; clicking on the map brings you to an interactive page showing all the locations. Information on getting to Belize & Ambergris Caye is here.
