For its relatively small size (about the same area as the US state of Massachusetts), Belize has a ton of diversity! Ambergris Caye is a very popular tourist destination, but it’s definitely worth visiting the jungle areas of the mainland as well to experience the different geography, flora and fauna. Many people like to stay in one place and so will spend a week on Ambergris Caye, taking a day trip or two to the mainland (any tour operator will pick you up at our dock & take you cave tubing, zip lining, and more!); but it’s also worth considering spending a few nights with us & a few nights in a jungle lodge!
I stayed recently at the Mariposa Jungle Lodge, boutique lodging with 6 cabañas in the Cayo District just 14 miles south of San Ignacio — it feels like you are in the middle of nowhere yet with all the amenities you could ask for. When did you last wake to the sound of howler monkeys? An experience!!
The lodge offers (among other things) a pool, a 20 foot bird watching tower, a spa, and a short but rigorous hike around the grounds with the trail as well as the trees and flowers well marked. The on site restaurant offers top notch meals and the lodge guides will take you on a variety of adventures. Would you dare to climb straight down into a cave with Maya relics and bones from 950 B.C., hearing stories of blood letting and sacrifices made there in Xibalba, the underworld….and then turn off your flashlight to experience utter and complete darkness?! That is just one of the amazing experiences you can have!
Mariposa Jungle Lodge is a fellow “Pack for a Purpose” accommodation offering; support the local school in the nearby village of San Antonio with your in-kind or financial donations. The lodge also offers a unique tour of the area villages so you can get to know the culture (& try your hand at making a tortilla – it’s harder than you think!).
Let me know of your interest & I would be happy to help with your jungle stay!
